Rihanna has released something red hot, but fans aren’t sure what to make of it. Some are stunned, others are perplexed, and still others are outraged that she released this before her long-awaited album.
Rihanna’s most recent Fenty Beauty launch aims to engage her audience in a game of guessing. The art collective MSCHF and the 34-year-old beauty maven have collaborated on a limited-edition palette ($25) that includes “six packets that each contain either ketchup or lip gloss.”
Both Fenty and MSCHF promoted the launch on Instagram, showing girls with Twiggy-style eye makeup and either beautifully painted lips with Rihanna’s gloss or messy mouths covered in ketchup. In one photo, a model dips a french fry into her sauced lips. MSCHF has released 83 pieces of merchandise since its inception in 2016 by Gabriel Whaley.
This unusual version of Russian Roulette is the group’s 83rd release. MSCHF has made a name for itself by releasing new stunt items every two weeks and frequently collaborating with celebrities.
Their stunt products range from “Eat the Rich” popsicles modeled after famous billionaires to rubber chicken toy bongs.
This latest release divided fans, who expressed their thoughts in the comments section of Fenty Beauty’s Instagram announcement post.
One person asked who would want to spend $25 on ketchup packets, while another joked that Rihanna might still be on maternity leave, and yet another signed off on the launch.
One appears to be interested in purchasing but is unsure what will happen if the product is already in her possession.
This individual inquired:
“Are the packets resealable if it is gloss?”
She went on to say that she has a lot of questions.
Despite the general interest and intrigue in the product, many people are more annoyed that Rihanna has released something unrelated to her music. Fans understand that she is a busy mother with a business to run, but they became fans in the first place because of her music and voice.
One commenter said:
“Literally everything but music.”
The commenter was clearly irritated that Rihanna is putting her makeup line ahead of her rumored ninth studio album.
The “Umbrella” singer dazzled audiences while pregnant in outfits ranging from vibrant vintage Chanel to completely sheer Dior, and her postpartum looks haven’t disappointed either. The actress most recently wore a black satin cone bra and matching lace-up leggings to a night out at Carbone, a celebrity favorite where she most likely ate something better than french fried sauce.
