Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have repeatedly stated that they will not receive financial support from the British royal family after they left their positions in 2020.
It has now been established, however, that they were not ignored. During their final year as working royals, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex received a substantial sum.
According to The Daily Mail, King Charles III, then Prince Charles, paid $5.1 million to Archie Harrison and Lilibet Diana’s parents. The sum was given to Prince Harry and Prince William to support their official duties and way of life in palaces paid for with tax dollars.
However, the amount of money given to King Charles III’s sons is unknown.
After leaving their royal positions, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spoke with Oprah Winfrey in 2021. The former stated that he was forced to negotiate contracts with Spotify and Netflix because his father had cut him off financially following Megxit.
According to a Clarence House official, the Duke of Sussex was given “significant money” by then-Prince Charles to help facilitate his relocation to the United States.
On March 31, 2020, the couple boarded an airplane bound for the United States.
Their spokesperson stated:
“Prince Charles had allocated a substantial sum to support them with this transition and the funding ceased in the summer of last year.”
Per ITV, they stated:
“As we’ll all remember in January 2020 when the Duke and Duchess [of Sussex] announced that they were going to move away from the working royal family, the duke said that they would work towards becoming financially independent.”
However, the spokeswoman refused to reveal how much Prince Harry received.
Tensions have risen with the royal family due to their allegations in the Oprah interview.
During their time in the UK following Queen Elizabeth II’s death, the couple appeared to get along well with The Firm.
In the days following the death of the previous monarch, they witnessed several instances of cooperation between Prince Harry, Meghan, and the rest of the royal family. With Prince William and Kate Middleton, the pair saw the floral tributes left by well-wishers outside Windsor Castle.
King Charles III praised them and their new life abroad in his inaugural speech as the new king.
Prince William and Prince Harry spend time together, but their relationship is still far from healed, despite several attempts.
