Constance Wu recalls Simu Liu’s betrayal after joking about her controversial “Fresh off the Boat” tweets.

Constance Wu made her acting debut in the 2006 film “Stephanie Daley” as a supporting character. She rose to prominence later in her career as the lead actress in the ABC comedy series “Fresh Off the Boat,” which was her first television role. Six seasons of the show aired from 2015 to 2020.

In 2019, the actress faced online backlash for her upset tweets about the renewal of “Fresh off the Boat,” with fans accusing her of being “ungrateful.” Wu explained that her outburst was caused by having to abandon a different project due to reprising her role on “Fresh off the boat.”

Wu was recently featured on an episode of “Red Table Talk,” hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris. Following her controversial tweets at the 2019 Unforgettable Gala, the 40-year-old actress recalled a painful time in her life.

Wu recalled during the interview:

“They wanted me to come ’cause they wanted to celebrate [Fresh off the Boat] and the kids on the show. At that time, there was so much controversy around me that I was like if I go, people are just gonna want to talk about the tweets. And like, I love my kids on the show so much. I want this to be a moment for them to celebrate.”

Despite Wu’s assurances, host Simu Liu couldn’t help but make a joke about her. It’s unclear what the actor said, but according to Deadline, Liu made a “playful jab” at the “Fresh off the Boat” star.

Wu recalled:

“I was sitting there alone, trying not to cry in a public setting and the whole audience was like,’Oh, s—! They had promised they wouldn’t mock me and they did it right off the bat. It almost felt like they were setting me up for it. And it truly felt like a betrayal from the Asian American community. A couple months prior to that, I was in the emergency room.”

Wu revealed that she attempted suicide following the online backlash she received for her controversial tweets before the 2019 Unforgettable Gala’s “mockery.”
