Shakira maintains a positive attitude despite heartbreak.
On New Year’s Day, the 45-year-old “Whenever, Wherever” singer took to Instagram to share an optimistic message about love and healing, months after her split from longtime partner Gerard Pique.
She wrote in Spanish:
“Even if our wounds are still open in this new year, time has a surgeon’s hands. Even if someone’s betrayed us, we must continue to trust others. When faced with contempt, continue to know your worth. Because there are more good people than indecent ones. More people with empathy than indifference.”
She continued:
“The ones who leave are fewer than the many who stay by our side. Our tears are not in vain, they water the soil our future will spring from and make us more human, so that even while suffering heartache we can continue to love.”
She signed off with “Shak” and included a heart with a drop emoji.
In the comments section of the post, a number of Shakira’s followers and fans expressed their support for her and her message.
Merck Mercuriadis commented:
“You are one of the good ones, Shak.”
Anna Kaiser added:
“Beautiful, Shaki.”
Javier Andrade wrote:
“We love you, Shak!”
Patricia Zavala wrote in Spanish:
“You are the best.”
Emilio Uribe opined in Spanish:
“Shakira, you are one of a kind.”
After 12 years together, Shakira and Pique announced their divorce in June. Milan, nine, and Sasha, seven, are their two children.
In her cover story interview for Elle’s October issue, the “Hips Don’t Lie” singer addressed their breakup for the first time.
She said:
“Oh, this is really hard to talk about personally, especially as this is the first time I’ve ever addressed this situation in an interview. I’ve remained quiet and just tried to process it all. Um, and yeah, it’s hard to talk about it, especially because I’m still going through it, and because I’m in the public eye and because our separation is not like a regular separation. And so it’s been tough not only for me, but also for my kids. Incredibly difficult.”
During their relationship, the Colombian singer and the Spanish athlete lived in Barcelona, Spain, so he could pursue his professional soccer career at F.C. Barcelona—a move Shakira regarded as a “love sacrifice,” given that her career would have been better if she had moved to the United States.
She explained to the magazine:
“And so, one of the two had to make that effort and that sacrifice. And I did it. I put my career in second gear and I came to Spain, to support him so he could play football and win titles. And it was a sacrifice of love. Thanks to that, my kids were able to have a present mom, and I have this amazing bond with them that is unbreakable and that sustains us. You know, that is it. That’s all I can say.”
Pique was accused of cheating on the Grammy winner after being linked to Clara Chia Marti, a 23-year-old student. In August, the Spanish media outlet Socialite published photos of the two kissing at the Summerfest Cerdanya festival in Catalonia.
Shakira did not address the rumors of infidelity in the interview, but she did say that she did her best for Pique and their family.
The singer told Elle:
“I think that those details are somehow too private to share, at least at this very moment—everything is so raw and new. I can only say that I put everything I had into this relationship and my family.”
