Is there a disconnect between the view from the White House and the reality on the ground?

Donald Trump has been facing accusations of being detached from reality after claiming to have achieved the highest polling numbers of his political career, a statement that stands in stark contrast to data describing his recent performance as ‘probably the worst’ 10-day stretch he has ever endured.

While the administration attempts to project strength and stability, particularly as it seeks to finally bury persistent rumours regarding the president’s past ties to Jeffrey Epstein, the numbers tell a very different story.

Writing on his own social media platform, Truth Social, the president appeared unfazed by the metrics, boasting to his followers: ‘I HAVE JUST GOTTEN THE HIGHEST POLL NUMBERS OF MY “POLITICAL CAREER.” While my great work on the Economy has not yet been fully appreciated, it will be! Things are really Rockin’.’

However, political analysts and data experts are struggling to locate the source of this optimism. It is not clear what polling he was referring to, as the major reputable surveys paint a picture of a presidency in freefall.

A fresh Associated Press survey revealed Donald Trump trailing with voters by as much as minus 26 points. Even in his strongest showing—a poll conducted by Marquette Law School—he was still down by 14 points.

Donald Trump Faces ‘Atrocious’ Numbers Even From Friendly Networks

The disparity between the president’s claims and the cold, hard data has left many observers baffled. CNN’s chief data analyst, Harry Enten, did not mince words when assessing the situation, calling the recent period ‘probably the worst’ 10-day stretch in the polls throughout his entire second term.

To illustrate the severity of the slide, Enten highlighted five major polls from November. The results were universally grim, with surveys from Fox, Marist and Ipsos/Reuters showing him at -17, -17 and -22, respectively.

The fact that even Fox News—a network that has historically provided a sympathetic platform for the president—shows such a significant deficit is telling.

‘This is probably the worst 10 day period for the president in the polls his entire second term,’ the CNN analyst said. ‘The numbers are just atrocious.’

Despite this, Trump doubled down on his assertion that his ‘highest poll numbers’ were a result of his delivery for the American people.

In the same Truth Social post, he wrote: ‘Stopping WARS and Foreign Relations seems to be a strong suit. Also great, The Border and Stopping Crime. I predict that the Economy, with the already HIGHEST STOCK MARKET, EVER, and prices coming sharply down from the Biden disaster, will soon be at the top of the list. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!’

Reaction to the post was swift and largely skeptical. Sharing an image of Trump’s post on X, political commentator Suzie Rizzio simply wrote: ‘Delusional.’

Inflation Woes Haunt Donald Trump as Independent Voters Abandon Ship

The data suggests that the core of the president’s polling collapse lies with a critical demographic: independent voters. Enten pinpointed Donald Trump’s ‘atrocious’ performance among independents as the primary driver of his polling freefall.

The shift has been dramatic, crashing by a staggering 39 points since assuming office. The president dropped from minus 4 points in January to minus 43 points in November.

‘Oh my God… when you’re 43 points underwater with independents, you know you’re doing terribly!’ Enten said, highlighting the electoral danger this poses for the Republican party.

‘You can’t win with this! If this holds for next year’s midterm election, wave adios amigos, goodbye, see you later to that House Republican majority. And that Senate Republican majority? Very much in danger as well!’

When it comes to the specific policy issues driving this exodus, the answer appears to be economic. Enten pointed to voter dissatisfaction with inflation as the main driver behind Trump’s plummeting approval numbers.

In January, Donald Trump enjoyed a favorable rating on inflation, registering at plus 3 points. By November, however, that number had plunged to minus 34 points.

‘They despise him at this point!’ Enten remarked.

This sentiment was echoed by Dante Chinni, founder and director of the American Communities Project (ACP). ‘Concerns about inflation are across the board,’ stated Chinni. ‘One thing that truly unites the country is economic angst.’

Reducing costs was among Trump’s central campaign pledges heading into the 2024 election.

Despite vowing to eliminate inflation ‘on day one,’ and to ‘bring down the prices of all goods,’ expenses have actually continued to climb since Trump assumed office, leaving voters to judge the administration not by its posts on social media, but by the receipts at the checkout counter.
