Alanis Morissette is one of the world’s most prolific female rock artists. She has sold over 75 million records worldwide and has established herself as one of the best Alternative singers in the industry.
Morissette is said to be performing with Olivia Rodrigo and other female singers in a tribute to Rock Hall Class of 2022 Inductee Carly Simon. Although everything has been planned and practiced, the “Jagged Little Pill” hitmaker opts out of the performance.
She then took to Instagram to make a shocking announcement about why she had canceled the performance in the first place.
According to Billboard, Morrisette will perform “You’re So Vain” with Olivia Rodrigo at the Rock Hall Induction Ceremony on November 7, 2022, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California.
Morissette, on the other hand, dropped out at the last minute.
According to an initial Page Six report, an insider claims that the duo’s first rehearsal for the song was rushed.
While many accepted that reason at the time, the Canadian music icon explained her absence on Instagram.
She confessed in a statement:
“I have spent decades in an industry that is rife with an overarching anti-woman sentiment and have tolerated a lot of condescension and disrespectfulness, reduction, dismissiveness, contract-breaching, unsupportiveness, exploitation and psychological violence (and more) throughout my career.”
Morissette later explained in her post that she tolerated it initially because severing her ties meant she couldn’t connect with those she cared about.
Morissette pointed out:
“I live to serve and connect with people and so over the years I sucked it up on more occasions than I can count in order to do so. It’s hard not to be affected in any industry around the world, but Hollywood has been notorious for its disrespect of the feminine in all of us.”
In her absence, Olivia Rodrigo had to put on her big girl shoes and perform the entire song herself, which she did admirably.
Alanis Morissette is confident that her absence speaks volumes about the industry’s sexism and discrimination, as she stated that there is no need for her to spend more time in an environment that diminishes women.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2022 included Carly Simon, Dolly Parton, Pat Benatar, Neil Giraldo, Duran Duran, Eminem, Eurythmics, and Lionel Richie.
