Post Malone and Swae Lee recently made history by achieving one of the most significant achievements in music.
Their 2018 single “Sunflower,” which was featured on the “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” film soundtrack, has received the highest RIAA Certification.
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is a trade organization representing the music recording industry in the United States. According to their official website, the RIAA was founded to honor artists and monitor sound recording sales. Simply put, they are the organization that grants Gold and Platinum Awards to artists for album and track certifications.
The soundtrack’s biggest hit is “Sunflower,” a song released by Post Malone and rapper Swae Lee. The song was included not only in the film’s soundtrack but also in Posty’s 2019 album “Hollywood Bleeding.”
The song debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, remaining for 33 weeks, before falling out of the Top 10.
It has also topped various music charts worldwide, including Australia, Malaysia, Canada, and New Zealand, among many others.
At the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, the record was nominated for two Grammys, Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, but it lost to Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” and Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” respectively.
The record recently received the Recording Industry Association of America’s highest certification for a track in its history.
According to Billboard, the song has now been certified 17x platinum, the highest certification given to a single in RIAA history since March 14, 1958, when music icon Perry Como received the first Gold award for his hit single, “Catch A Falling Star.”
Despite not winning a Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, “Sunflower” outsold Lil Nas X’s song “Old Town Road” in terms of RIAA certification, with the latter’s song only being certified 15 times Platinum.
Swae Lee said in a statement celebrating the feat:
“You guys made history with us! And to post and [Spiderverse character] Miles Morales, glad the music could get the attention and love it deserves. So much more to come! SREMMLIFE!”
