For context, the incident is the latest in a series of increasingly bizarre public performances that have dogged Trump’s third run for the White House and sharpened questions about his age, judgement and grip on the job. The 80‑year‑old has been recycling the same odd weightlifting skit for at least the past two years, even as critics warn it makes him look unserious at best and unwell at worst.

The Pennsylvania speech, billed as an economic and manufacturing address, veered sharply off course when Donald Trump launched into a story about a female weightlifter and trans women in sport. He crouched, hunched his shoulders and began acting out an Olympic lift, complete with repeated moans into the microphone, as factory workers watched.
‘You know the weightlifter where he goes up, and the record stood for years and years, years,’ Trump began, before drifting into a tangent about a ‘young lady’ training for the Olympics. He described her parents watching from the front row, the mother screaming, ‘Darling, I love you, Tarik,’ and the father supposedly doubting she could complete the lift, ‘because she’s a woman. It’s a lot of weight…’
Trump then detailed the fictional athlete staring at the barbell, dropping it, and being ‘devastated for the rest of her life’, before bringing in ‘a guy [who] comes along who transitioned’. Throughout the anecdote, he punctuated his words with loud, theatrical groans and exaggerated lifting gestures.
The routine, ostensibly an attack on trans participation in women’s sport, quickly drowned out whatever policy message the White House might have hoped to push from the factory floor. Video clips spread across social media within minutes, with the moans on a loop and captions that were not exactly presidential.
One viewer, reacting to the footage, asked pointedly what ‘on God’s green earth’ the display had to do with ‘either the economy or Iran’, a reference to Americans struggling financially and turbulence in the Middle East. Another wrote they were ‘so ashamed of our country’ and questioned why the president was ‘acting like a toddler’.
The criticism was not subtle. ‘It’s so embarrassing that this doofus is president. Where did we go wrong?’ one user fumed, while another called the bit ‘stupid during the campaign and even dumber and completely irrelevant to anything that he should be focused on right now’.

In January, speaking at the House GOP Member Retreat, Trump himself admitted that Melania Trump has been trying, and failing, to kill off the bit. By his own telling, the former first lady has been blunt.
‘My wife hates when I do this. She’s a very classy person, right?’ he told Republicans in the room. ‘She said, “It’s not unpresidential.” I said, “But I did become president”… She said, “Darling, please, the weightlifting is terrible.”’
Trump also told supporters that Melania ‘hates when I dance’, recalling her asking, ‘Can you imagine FDR dancing?’ It was meant as a laugh line, but it underlined a clear split in instincts. The woman who helped cultivate his more formal image in the White House apparently sees the antics as beneath the office. Trump, by contrast, treats them as proof he can break the rules and still win.
That personal tug‑of‑war gives Tuesday’s performance a sharper edge. The president was not riffing once in the heat of a campaign rally. He was reviving a routine his wife has explicitly labelled ‘terrible’, in front of industrial workers, with America’s economic challenges as the supposed backdrop.
‘25th Amendment’ Chatter Grows Louder
The news came after months of speculation about Donald Trump’s health and fitness, fuelled by his increasingly meandering speeches and visible physical issues, including bruising on his hands and swollen ankles that have been widely discussed online. None of those observations have been formally explained by the White House.
The combination of strange public behaviour and visible ailments has led some critics to go far beyond jokes. Following the Mack Trucks appearance, calls resurfaced on social media for Trump’s cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment, the constitutional mechanism that allows a president to be removed if he dies or is deemed unable to carry out his duties.
Supporters of that drastic step argue that a pattern of ‘nonsensical’ speeches and erratic stagecraft show a leader no longer up to the role. Opponents, and of course Trump’s own circle, dismiss the idea as political theatre. That is classic Trump, self‑certifying his own brilliance while medical records remain largely out of public view. There has been no independent confirmation of the specific tests he references or the standards he claims they meet.
So the split screen persists. On one side, an 80‑year‑old president telling factory workers a strange parable about a weightlifter and ‘a guy [who] transitioned’, moaning into the microphone as critics clutch their heads. On the other, a commander‑in‑chief insisting he is in perfect health, cognitively sharp and in full control.
