The complete list of nominees for the 2023 Golden Globe Awards has been released, and one of the most anticipated categories, Best Original Song, will feature a three-way fight between three major pop stars.
The 2023 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song is one of the institution’s oldest awards, dating back to 1962.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization behind the Golden Globe Awards, bestows the award on the songwriters of a song written specifically for a film. However, unless they have writing credits on the actual material, performers of the song were not credited in some cases.
Three of the five nominees for the 2023 Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song are pop music’s biggest names this year: Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna.
“Lift Me Up,” the anthem from “Black Panther 2,” earned Rihanna her first Golden Globe nomination. The track is a strong contender for the title. On its debut, the song soared to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Rihanna’s comeback single, “Lift Me Up,” was her first song since 2016.
Meanwhile, the song is expected to be nominated for Best Original Song at the 2023 Academy Awards. If Rihanna receives another nomination for the song at the Oscars, it will be her first. Along with Rihanna, Tems and Ryan Coogler are credited as co-writers on the song.
Although it did not chart as well as “Lift Me Up,” “Carolina” is a highly acclaimed Taylor Swift opus because it perfectly encapsulated the overall mood, vibe, and sense of “Where The Crawdads Sing.”
This is Taylor Swift’s fourth Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Song. Her first was for “Safe and Sound” for “The Hunger Games,” “Sweeter Than Fiction” for “One Chance,” and her most recent for “Cats” and “Beautiful Ghosts” in 2010. Swift has yet to receive a nomination.
“Hold My Hand,” a ballad from “Top Gun: Maverick,” could be Lady Gaga’s way of winning her second Golden Globe Award. In 2018, Gaga won the award over Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “All The Stars” and Dolly Parton’s “Girl in the Movies,” among others, with “Shallow” from “A Star Is Born.”
“Ciao Papa,” by Guillermo del Toro and Roeban Katz from “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” and “Naatu Naatu,” by Kala Bhairava, M. M. Keeravani, and Rahul Sipligunj from “RRR,” were also nominated.
